Norlane Aquatic and Recreation Centre

Project Perspective

After nearly 60 years of servicing the northern corridor of Geelong, the former Norlane Waterworld was replaced by the brand new Norlane Aquatic and Recreation Centre in 2024.

This long overdue upgrade was imperative to ensure the City of Greater Geelong can continue to provide essential services to the rapidly growing Geelong region, particularly in the north.

The new building design consists of a pool hall that contains three 50-metre multi-purpose pools along with a kids waterplay park and two large indoor/outdoor waterslides, four large studios for hosting a range of fitness classes, a fully fitted-out gym and a range of other supplementary spaces.

Heading toward the west of the building, you will find a fully fitted-out Community Hall complete with huge flat-floor multi-purpose area, stage, kitchen facilities, dressing rooms and gathering spaces. Together this part of the building can host large conferences, stage performances, trade events, balls and dinners. This space has replaced the aging Centennial Hall which had served the community since the early 70’s.

dwp was engaged to design this 5-Star Green Star-rated building and Kane Constructions, with their rich history in the Geelong region, was awarded the contract to complete all aspects of the build. MultiTek Solutions was engaged as the Audio Visual Technology Partner.

Technical Requirements

MultiTek Solutions provided a Q-Sys distributed audio system that covered all front-of-house public spaces as well as each zone of the pool hall. This gave the client the ability to make important pages throughout the complex, but also to enable instructors to use wireless microphones and music devices in each of the pool zones simultaneously for aqua aerobics, training and other classes.

The gym and studios were fitted out with high-end QSC audio systems, Shure ULX-D wireless microphones and Epson projection.

The Community Hall utilises control and live audio distribution by Q-Sys, audio and video transport by Visionary as well as ETC for lighting fixtures and control, JANDS JLX for lighting bars and Pathport for lighting control. Two high-end Epson projectors are also used for presentation.

Outcomes

The build timeframe totalled over two years for this large project and overlapped with COVID lockdowns and supply chain shortages, but with a close project team dedicated to achieving the best result for the client, the Norlane Aquatic and Recreation Centre opened to great excitement to the public in early 2024.

MultiTek Solutions added this project to a long list of buildings we have completed for the City of Greater Geelong and further strengthened our 20-year relationship as the preferred audio-visual supplier.
