PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

The majestic 1920's-style Dining Hall at Geelong Grammar's Corio Campus is a traditional, yet other-worldly venue. The beauty and simplicity of the oak panelled walls accompanied with the voluminous vaulted timber ceilings, command attention on entering.

The Dining Hall is where all Senior School students take meals. Day and full-time boarders, teaching staff, and school alumni regularly use the Dining Hall for any matter of functions and presentations, including, but not limited to, festive luncheons and gala events.

Grammar required a multifunctional, easy to use and adaptable sound system that was responsive to different situations. The acoustics in the space are notoriously reverberant, so MultiTek Solutions sought to design a system that would lower the levels of sound without compromising on sound quality or impacting on the architectural integrity of the building. Speech intelligibility and reduced reverberation were essential components of this brief.

TECHNICAL OUTLINES

MultiTek designed the install positioning the speakers in closer proximity to patrons enabling the overall volume to be lowered and thus reducing unwanted reverberation. With more speakers placed strategically throughout the room, the speech intelligibility improved significantly. The team at MultiTek used their skills to engineer a system that would not 'excite' an already easily excitable space.

MultiTek Solutions designed a sleek, unobtrusive and high functioning system that distributes sound evenly throughout the venue. The new touch button controls allow for greater sound and functionality. From both the North and South ends of the hall, the sound can be muted to reduce any unwanted reverberation when holding small, central positioned events.

Clean and smooth sound now reflects gently off the flat walls without unwanted echo. The new system gives end-users the opportunity to be more flexible and creative with the levels of sound achievable in the Dining Hall. It is now much easier for operators to tweak the levels, directions, and dynamics of sounds within the venue while reducing resonance.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

The updated sound system has improved the convivial ambience of the Dining Hall tenfold. The neat and compact pod pendant speakers suspend subtly along the length of the ceiling; they track evenly from one end of the room to the other. Unless pointed out, guests to the Dining Hall would barely notice the sophisticated new system due to its discreet colour and shape. The updated system camouflages well and blends beautifully with the ceiling, not detracting from the unique aesthetics of the heritage room.

Built in 1913 and extended in 1933, Grammar's Dining Hall has seen the comings and goings of many great gatherings. Today the historical hall breathes new life, recharged by MultiTek's design and installation of a more practical, reliable and better-suited AV system, one that enhances the listening environment by taming the reverb issues.
