With its galleries, theatres, studios, workshops, and practice spaces the University of Melbourne’s VCA is a rich creative hub supporting a community of artists, students, lecturers and industry mentors. The quirky looking liquorice allsorts structure recently underwent a significant refurbishment program.
MultiTek Solutions was successfully appointed as the ‘Theatrical Equipment Contractor’ on the redevelopment of Building 879 and worked collaboratively with William Ross Architects and Marshall Day Entertech to supply and install all Specialist Technical AV Equipment for the theatre building upgrade.
The work covered by MultiTek Solutions comprised the detailed engineering, equipment supply, delivery and installation of AV infrastructure to numerous spaces throughout the venue. The aim was to make the VCA spaces more accessible and user-friendly.
Incorporating high-level, high-energy, multi-media technology able to meet a high-level of audience and community expectation was required. From a technical standpoint, the upgrade focused on the structural and rigging requirements of the VCA as well as building on the already existing cable infrastructure within each of the venues.
MultiTek Solutions’ scope of work included the relocation and fit-off to increased cable and technical panel infrastructure throughout the theatre’s Foyer, Space 28, and Performance Studios 5, and 6. A complete upgrade and refinement of the building’s structural and rigging capabilities were completed in preparation for any future upgrades. Performance spaces 3 and 4 will be upgraded at a later date.
MultiTek Solutions also installed new Video and Audio Tielines, Stage Lighting Sub-Circuits, Stage Lighting Controls and Technical and AV Data Networks to the facility. Paging, Chimes, Playback and Talkback systems were also installed to help diversify the use of the VCA spaces and allow for greater performance and stage capabilities. New ceiling speakers, LCD Monitors, dimmers and stage lighting patch panels were also installed.
Building 879 is well known for showcasing the works of artists from eclectic backgrounds. Improvements to the venue have enabled artists to be more flexible and experimental within their work. The technical equipment installed by MultiTek Solutions is proving to be beneficial by providing maximum usability and functionality for Melbourne University students, alumni, and the wider community.
The technical equipment installed by MultiTek is user-friendly and has assisted in making the art space more contemporary and multidisciplinary. The upgraded technology at the VCA equals more productive time and meets the diverse needs of the end users. The spaces are now more dynamic, creating greater learning and teaching opportunities for many.
